The stunning statistics of type 2 diabetes are unfortunately not always persuasive enough for people to start taking better care of themselves.
The long-range health problems dealing with diabetes connect everything. And they are scary too – kidney failure, loss of eyesight, heart disease, loss of limbs, loss of feeling in feet, legs, and hands, and erectile disfunction.
Economically, society will have to deal with most of the long-term costs of diabetic's problems through higher insurance rates, higher taxes, higher hospital bills as most people won't be able to afford the care necessary. People will start to be denied healthcare if they are diabetic or pre-diabetic.
You might be able to make an interesting talk on lower-income families being statistically more at risk of developing diabetes. Is it because of education? Lack of exercise? Fast food is cheap? Lack of preventative care? I would be interested in finding out more about it. How about the fact that a hamburger costs $1 at some fast food places, but with long-term 'over-use' can aid in the development of diabetes – which can cost X amount of dollars for the individual and X amount of dollars for society. What is the price of our health? We are just delaying the payment, aren't we? Not paying for education, preventative care, and cheap food now leads to huge costs economically, physically and emotionally later.
Hope I helped. I would love to see what you come up with.

I don't want to do your homework FOR you so I will give you some things to think about and research:

I'm guessing you are talking about Type 2 Diabetes—you can't really prevent Type 1 diabetes real well.

Type 2 Diabetes has several risk factors… Do a search for "Type 2 diabetes risk factors" — look at these risk factors and figure out WHICH risk factors are things a person has control over. Think about the effect of someone CHANGING some of their controllable risk factors…would that change their diabetes risk? Is changing diabetes risk worth doing?

If you're not sure about the answer to the last question then research "Diabetes Complications" (they are the same for type 2 and 1) and look at the HORRIBLE things that can happen to someone with diabetes that doesn't take care of their health.

Is it worth changing one's diabetes risk now? Does it persuade you?

The only type of diabetes that you can possibly prevent is type 2. Being over weight and having a bad diet can CONTRIBUTE to type 2 diabetes….it is not the cause. Too many people think it's that simple…it is not. Having diabetes in your family will definitely put you at risk. If you are at risk, you need to watch your diet. Many, many people that develop type 2 have never been over weight or lived on junk food. It's a bad misconception too many people have. Type 1 is when the body does not make insulin…period. They are completely insulin dependent. Type 2..the pancreas does not make enough insulin, or the body does not use the insulin that is produced correctly. People with type 2 mostly take oral meds, although some take oral meds and insulin and some are completely insulin dependent. Both types need to watch their diet closely

I cant really be much help to you. I just want to say PLEASE say which type of diabetes you're going to be talking about. Type 1 diabetes can NOT be prevented. Diet and exercise have nothing to do with whether or not you get type 1.
